THIS is an engine

Everything we’ve learnt from decades of building true 4-wheel drives has gone into this advanced power plant. The old way of thinking has been to generate power with cubic displacement. Now, we’ve created a diesel engine that produces more power and torque from 2.5 litres and 4 cylinders.

Handling the power

Translating all the power and torque to the wheels is our proven INVECS II 5-speed automatic transmission. As an automatic, it has the advantage of being smooth and easy to drive in the city. But this is a Challenger, and there’s more to it than just driving sedately around town. So when you’re off-road or towing, you engage Sport Mode. This lets you select gears like a manual, but without the clutch. Not having to engage a clutch means no loss of momentum on tricky surfaces.

It all adds up to serious towing

Challenger gives you the power to hook up and haul loads of up to 3 tonnes. Engine, gearbox, traction systems and brakes work together to make towing straightforward and safe.

Serious grip

However tough the going gets, this button on GLS models gets you out. By locking the rear diff, both back wheels receive the same amount of power, whatever surface they’re on. You might never need it. But if you do, you’ll be glad it’s there.

Safety throughout

Challenger features Mitsubishi’s Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution body design, or RISE. This system brings together energy-absorbing crumple zones, reinforced body points at strategic positions and side-impact door beams. The result is a very stiff frame, which reduces impact and protects all occupants.
