Eclipse Cross: Mitsubishi’s bold new star try

A total solar eclipse is considered to be one of nature’s most awe-inspiring sights, yet it can’t be viewed directly with the naked eye. When it comes to the brand-new Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, onlookers simply won’t be able to avert their gaze.

Mitsubishi Motors is proud to announce the arrival of an all-new nameplate to its range. Marrying sleek coupe lines with the freedom of movement of an SUV, the attractively styled Eclipse Cross will be available as a 2WD or AWD in XLS and VRX editions.

Packed with a glittering array of advanced technology and safety features as standard, it is being heralded by Mitsubishi as an exciting new phenomenon in the automotive sphere.

“The arrival of this smart and stylish compact SUV marks a significant addition to our line-up – one which is sure to turn heads and spark imaginations,” said Mitsubishi NZ general manager of vehicle sales and marketing Daniel Cook.

“In terms of size, it sits between Outlander and ASX. In terms of styling, performance and technology, it is in a league of its own. It is our most advanced vehicle yet, packed full of features.

“There is a lot to get excited about, from bold exterior detailing to the introduction of Mitsubishi’s all-new 1.5L Direct Injection Turbo engine and CVT with 8-speed Sport Mode. We’re just as thrilled with this new model as we think customers will be.”

Dazzling looks

The eye-catching Eclipse Cross leads from the front with a new Advanced Dynamic Shield front fascia, delivering a distinctive Mitsubishi look and feel and giving the vehicle its own unique identity. At the rear, a sporty spoiler and stylish taillight design combine to ensure a lasting impression.

With 18” alloy wheels, sleek chrome accents and privacy glass as standard, Eclipse Cross presents a markedly premium appearance – all of which is completed by a new Brilliant Red hero colour option.

Even the paint job takes this vehicle into a new dimension. A multilayered base and clear coat process – featuring rich red pigment, highly reflective aluminium flakes and mica – lends unrivalled depth and brightness to the finished effect.

Interior design

Sleek styling continues inside the cabin, where quality materials combine with ergonomic design to create a comfortable, high-end environment with a sporty attitude.

The centre console links seamlessly with the dash, putting functionality within fingertip reach. In fact, fingertip control has never been so fully realised as in the new Eclipse Cross.

Mitsubishi’s Smartphone link Display Audio (SDA) interface has been revised to reflect the new Touchpad Commander function – a new and unique feature standard across all Eclipse Cross models, which enables efficient operation of SDA through an easy-to-use, intuitive touchpad.

The VRX also features a new Head-up Display directly in front of the steering wheel. This projects important information to the driver, allowing them to maintain attention on the road.

To enhance enjoyment of the journey, a dual sunroof can be tilted open for ventilation on warm days or the shade fully retracted for those who don’t want to block out the sun.

Advanced safety systems

Eclipse Cross boasts stellar credentials when it comes to safety. From high-rigidity body construction to cutting-edge technology, this vehicle is packed with features to make the journey safer and more enjoyable.

Forward Collision Mitigation with windscreen-mounted laser and camera, Lane Departure Warning, Auto High Beam, Rain-Sensing Wipers and Dusk-Sensing Headlights all come as standard.

The VRX adds radar functionality plus Adaptive Cruise Control, Blind Spot Warning (with Lane Change Assist), Rear Cross Traffic Alert and a Multi-Around View Monitor.

Even the Adaptive Cruise Control system has been enhanced to allow use at low speed, while navigating rush hour traffic. The distance settings have been increased from three to four steps and the system resumes from standstill when the accelerator is pressed. Improved detection around corners and when vehicles cut in front help to create an even safer driving experience.

Power and performance

The Eclipse Cross range features an all-new torque-rich powerplant that maximises efficiency and enhances performance. The new 1.5L Direct Injection Turbo engine delivers up to 112kW and 254Nm for a smooth, powerful ride.

It has been developed alongside a new CVT system with 8-speed Sports Mode, featuring wide gear ratios to extract maximum potential. The presence of Step Shift Control enables more direct acceleration feeling as well as reducing engine noise.

For the next level in performance, the Eclipse Cross XLS and VRX All-Wheel Drive models feature Mitsubishi’s proven Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) – an integrated system that incorporates an electronically controlled AWD system with ABS, Active Stability Control and Active Yaw Control.

S-AWC offers the driver three modes:

• Normal: 4WD performance across most conditions.

• Snow: Best suited for snowy conditions and greater stability on slippery roads.

• Gravel: High-traction off-road ability.

So if the best vantage point for the next celestial phenomenon happens to be a little off the beaten track, the AWD Eclipse Cross is a safe bet to get you there – and in style and comfort too. With no expense of the latter, the 2WD provides a competitive entry point for discerning motorists who want to experience the most exciting phenomenon to enter Mitsubishi’s orbit in recent years.

All new Mitsubishi vehicles are backed by New Zealand’s leading warranty, Diamond Advantage.

On sale from mid-December, the 1.5L XLS 2WD model will be available for the special limited price of $34,990 + ORC (RRP $41,690 + ORC), with the VRX priced at $45,590 + ORC. AWD models will be available from April 2018.
