One SUV to rule them all

The new Mitsubishi Outlander launches this month – fully equipped to reclaim its throne as New Zealand’s favourite SUV, and make drivers feel like kings and queens of the road.

Daniel Cook, Mitsubishi Motors NZ head of sales and marketing strategy, says that with seven seats as standard across the range, the new Outlander is already a step ahead of other pretenders to the crown.

“Outlander spent several years as the best-selling SUV in New Zealand; it set a standard at an exceptional level of value that led to other brands raising their game,” said Mr Cook. “We have embraced the challenge from our competitors and are confident that our new model Outlander has what it takes to be Kiwis’ No.1 once again.”

Seven models strong, the spec starts high and gets better from there. Seven seats, 18-inch alloys and smartphone display audio (SDA) are standard from the 2WD LS through to the 4WD VRX. Even the spare wheel is a full-sized alloy – fitted under the rear of the vehicle to maximise passenger space, or storage for all the gear you need on the go.

SDA integrates up-to-the-minute, on-the-go communication with the freedom of the open road, allowing drivers to remain in full control of the wheel and their smartphones on a clear, 7-inch, dash-mounted touch screen via Apple CarPlay or Android AutoTM. When the time comes to get in or out of a tight park, the rear view camera comes online to help the driver reverse with confidence.

Improvements at the business end include a remapped six-speed CVT in all petrol models, for smoother acceleration and reduced engine noise, plus a new-generation starter motor. And that’s just the beginning.

Safe as castles

“Whether driving solo or with six passengers on board, Outlander has been carefully engineered and packed with features to ensure every journey, and everybody, is as safe and stress-free as possible – whatever the conditions on the road.”

Incorporating Mitsubishi RISE body construction, ABS, Active Stability Control, Active Traction Control, Hill Start Assist and seven airbags, every Outlander exceeds 5 Star ANCAP safety requirements. But there’s more to the safety story.

The 2WD XLS, new to the line-up, certainly knows how to make an entrance – a very safe entrance.

As well as being equipped with an Auto High Beam function, which automatically turns on high beam if no vehicles are in front or approaching, its Lane Departure Warning technology is a first for any Mitsubishi vehicle. Its safety package also includes Forward Collision Mitigation and Adaptive Cruise Control systems, with radar and a camera in the top of the windscreen for improved performance and pedestrian recognition.

4WD XLS and VRX models boast yet another Mitsubishi first – Rear Cross Traffic Alert, which registers vehicles approaching from either side as a driver reverses. 4WD models further benefit from Blind Spot Warning technology, to assist lane changing in busy traffic.

Reliable power and performance

We’ve already covered a lot, but even that’s not the full story; prospective owners will have more to discover when they book in for a test drive! When it comes to power and performance, however, they can bank on the tried and trusted 2.0L (2WD) and 2.4L (4WD) MIVEC petrol engines featured in the existing Outlander range – delivering 112 kW and 193 Nm at 6.7L/100km (156 CO2 g/km), or 126 kW and 224 Nm at 7.2L/100km (167 CO2 g/km) respectively.

The diesel engine description has been updated from 2.2L to 2.3L – delivering 112 kW and 366 Nm at just 6.2L/100km (162 C02 g/km).
