Some things just get better with time.
Take Mitsubishi’s Pajero. The classic offroader, now in its fourth generation, has been around since the eighties. Remember its phenomenal ten years of wins in the punishing Dakar Rally?
Yet, says Mitsubishi, this year has brought record interest in this perennial 3-tonne-towing SUV, with sales levels not seen for a decade or more. They see the resurgence continuing as the new 2015 Exceed and GLS models enter the market mid September.
“The new models add plenty of detailed visual and specification enhancements to Pajero’s already uncommonly-high refinement level”, says Mitsubishi’s sales and marketing strategy chief Daniel Cook. “These are sure to appeal to demanding buyers thinking to follow the trend and promote the seven-seat long-wheelbase turbodiesel higher on their preference list”.
There’s a fresh, robust front-end dimension to the 2015 Pajero, with a new bumper and grille design and daytime-safety LEDs tucked beside the fog lights. Inside, tasteful touches of piano black and silver and a new audio/GPS unit with a big touch screen and reverse image add further cachet to the classy, comfortable, practical driving environment
For 2015, the GLS shares the Exceed’s 18” alloys, high-intensity headlights, and colour-keyed mirrors that fold, demist, and wear a prominent turn indicator for extra safety.
The leather-upholstered Exceed adds further luxury, such as heated front seats, 12-speaker audio and seven inch audio screen: for 2015 it gets a new panoramic electric sunroof and high-beam headlights that dip automatically when driving conditions demand or oncoming vehicles approach. The latest Exceed makes significant further gains in noise suppression.
Some things stay the same, says Daniel Cook, because they are the “essence” of Pajero. “Count among these its immense torsional rigidity, its grunty 448 Newton metres of torque, its Super Select 'shift on the fly' 4WD and its end-to-end safety systems.
“All have been progressively tuned to achieve a red-blooded vehicle that goes virtually anywhere with ultimate confidence and security, and makes light work of towing huge trailers, horse floats and boats, in fact anything up to 3.0T that needs the power and size only Pajero can offer”.
